This week our class talked about different ways of saving energy. My goal was to have students explain and practice 5 different ways of conserving energy at school and at home.
The education standard this activity addressed is S3L2, which says that students will identify ways to protect the environment, including conservation of resources.

The five ways we talked about saving energy are:
1) Turning off lights, computers, and other electrical devices when you aren't using them
2) Closing the refrigerator door
3) Taking short showers instead of long baths
4) Planting trees to shade your house or school from the sun's rays during summer
5) Carpooling with family and friends to save gas and energy

My assistant teacher and I performed a puppet show with the characters Fineas the Frog and Candy the Crocodile, who learned several different ways to save energy. Fineas recited the following poem that he learned in class, and we all learned it as class.

It’s time for school, take a quick shower.
Don’t take too long. Save water for flowers.
Close the fridge door from breakfast you ate.
Hurry off to school, You don’t want to be late.
Carpool with friends to school today.
It helps save energy and make our planet great!
Plant a tree with your teacher at school.
It provides shade and keeps your classroom cool.
When you go to bed and mom says “Good night.”
Always remember to turn out the lights.

The students really enjoyed the puppet show and created their own journal entries and accompanying pictures for show and tell to demonstrate the ways they learned to practice conserving energy.
